Communicate with Clarity, Confidence, and Compassion

To convey knowledge of or information about: make known

Above is the definition of “communicate” in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary and, at first glance, it appears relatively simple and easy to do. However, as most of us can acknowledge and appreciate from our collective business experience, it can often be quite challenging to communicate effectively and successfully. In many cases, miscommunication results in a need for much MORE communication than if we had done it well the first time.

So, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How well do I communicate with my insurance carrier representatives?
  2. How effectively do I communicate with my customers?
  3. How successfully do I communicate with my colleagues?

If you answered “great” to all, then please share your magic potion of skills with us.

If you feel there is room for improvement, keep reading this “Focus on Success” collaboration. Following are some valuable tips for successfully getting your message across to your target audience. I based these tips on my Three C’s of Communication: Clarity, Confidence, and Compassion.

Clarity

  • Be as clear as possible. Focus on your key objective.
  • Don’t mix too many topics.
  • Keep your message simple. Use only the words you need. Less is MORE.

Confidence

  • Be correct in your grammar and vocabulary. If you have not done so already, consider using Grammarly (www.grammarly.com) to help improve your written communication.
  • If you are not sure about how to say or write something, don’t rush and regret. ASK your manager or a colleague for help.
  • Get all your facts lined up before you communicate anything. Details count.

Compassion

  • Listen and learn FIRST. People accept more when they feel you listen.
  • Understand your audience and their WHY before you have them understand yours.
  • Be patient with people. If you don’t succeed the first time, breathe deeply, then try again.
